Finca La Bolsa is a renowned coffee plantation located in La Libertad, Huehuetenango, Guatemala, founded in 1958 by Dr. Jorge Vides, a doctor who balanced his medical career with a passion for coffee farming. He purchased the land, which was once forested, and began cultivating coffee varieties such as Bourbon and Caturra. His dedication to both health and coffee led him to become a significant figure in the region, even founding a school on the farm, which is still running today. In recognition of his contributions to the coffee industry, he was named 'Distinguished Coffee Grower' by Anacafé in 1984.
Today, Finca La Bolsa is managed by María Elena Vides, Jorge's daughter, and her son Renardo Ovalle. The farm spans 132 hectares and produces roughly 20,000 quintales of coffee annually. It is known for its high-quality coffee, growing both traditional and experimental coffee varieties on over 312,000 trees. The farm employs careful processing methods for its washed and natural coffees, which include dry fermentation and patio drying. Finca La Bolsa is also active in community initiatives, offering programs such as a daycare for coffee pickers' children, a coffee-school grant, and a program to support neighboring small farmers with technical assistance.
Finca La Bolsa's reputation for producing exceptional coffee is built on the combination of the region’s favorable growing conditions, including high altitudes and a temperate climate, along with the family’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. They have recently transitioned one of their neighboring farms to organic coffee production, further diversifying their offerings and contributing to the broader coffee community.
‣ For optimal flavor, we recommend enjoying the coffee 2 weeks after roasting to allow it to degas, with peak freshness lasting up to 2 months.
